My initial, failed strategy for creating this project's stencils. I attempted to print on normal computer paper, and compile the images into a mosaic on top of thicker paper for stenciling. This strategy was incredibly time consuming, mainly because I was unable to print each tile borderlessly (meaning each of the sixteen pages had to be trimmed perfectly on up to 4 edges), and I thus abandoned it after completing the first layer.
Eventually, I gained access to a large format printer. Due to the fact that this printer could only print up to 24" wide, I had to split each layer of the "American Gothic" image between two pages. The entire project thus required thirteen intricate layers, the most detailed of which took many hours to cut.
